Sailing fir the disabled was started after a meeting at Whitehaven marina in 2000, with the skipper (Ray Platt) a yacht.
This yacht took disabled people sailing and it was quite apparent from these conversations I had with the disabled people the sheer joy, they got out of sailing.

Ray Platt was also involved in raising £1000 for the i.o.m charity in order to purchase their yacht.

Ray offered his help and worked many hours with us and after three long years we were granted £94,000 from the national lottery and finally realised our dream.

We sailed The Pride of Cumbria from Hayling island some 620 miles to her home berth at Maryport marina in June 2004.

Since bringing her back we have had just under 600 people on board, which includes disabled people, skipper, crews and young trainees.

Pride of CumbriaWe also had a visit from the children of Chernobyl.

Big Thankyou To Everyone Involved

We owe Maryport Marina, Mahagel, Pauline Gorler, Noel Butters M.D.L, and the marina staff our gratitude, for allowing us to operate The Pride of Cumbria from Maryport marina.
